认识景德镇完全是因为我的哥们王豫明。

Everything I know about Jingde County is because of my buddy Wang Yuming.

和豫明兄认识在八十年代,那时候我在洛阳,刚刚开始玩摄影,而他已经是一个集作家、诗人、摄影家为一身的著名人物。我经常拿一些作品给他,一来二去,我们便成了很好的朋友。

I first met Yuming in the 1980s, when I was living in Luoyang and had just begun to play around with photography, while he was already a well known author, poet and photographer. I would often show him some of my work, and eventually we became good friends.

我常说,朋友之间难得的是真诚,越是真诚结交的朋友越有质量。四十岁之后不交酒肉朋友、不交无信之友,只交良师益友便是这个道理。豫明兄就是这样的良师益友。

I often say that the hardest thing to come by in a friend is sincerity, and the more sincere the relationship, the stronger it will be. The statement “After 40 don’t get drinking friends, don’t get unrighteous or impious friends, just get friends that can teach you things” is a reflection of this principle. And Yuming is definitely a friend who can teach me many things.

2008第一次来景德镇豫明爱上这里的陶瓷,随后经常去景德镇画瓷、烧瓷。在那里处下各门派的艺术家,业内口碑甚好。

In 2008 when Yuming came to Jingdezhen for the first time he fell in love with porcelain, and later often went there to paint and fire his own works. He also developed rapport with artists from numerous factions, and has always had a strong reputation among them.

2012年,豫明在景德镇三宝村租下了一栋民居,开始了他的景漂生活。而我每次去景德镇都是他去机场接我。由于他人缘好,很多艺术家和陶瓷艺人都认接纳他,沾他的光,我在景德镇的拍摄作业也都很方便。这次我们杂志要做一期景漂的文章,依然是他带着我四处留意拍摄素材

In 2012, Yuming rented a home in Sanbao Village of Jingdezhen, thus beginning his life as a “Jingde drifter”. Whenever I went to Jingdezhen he would always pick me up at the airport. Since he was so well connected, many artists and porcelain craftsmen vouched for, accepted and benefited from him, my photography work in Jingde always went very smoothly. One time the magazine I work for was doing an article about “Jingde drifters”, and Yuming took me all over the place to take my photos.

在这里,叫景德镇还是叫景德镇市都不重要,重要的是人做的怎么样,瓷就做的怎么样。豫明一直是这么认为的。

“Here, it’s not important whether you call it Jingdezhen, Jingde Town or Jingdezhen City, what’s important is that the better a person you are, the better your porcelain will be.” Yuming has always believed this.

1953景德镇就被设立为江西省辖市,但景德镇的城市形象似乎一直定格在了上,它的外表既不像大城市那样光鲜亮丽,也不像许多古城那样充满了历史的厚重,初到这里我看到的就是一个平凡、略显杂乱稍显没落的小镇。

In 1953 Jingdezhen (meaning “the Town of Jingde”) became a prefecture-level city of Jiangxi Province, after which it was officially known as Jingdezhen City, but it seems like in terms of image it has always remained a “town”. It’s not as big and bright as most cities, nor does it have the rich history of the ancient capitals of China. When I first arrived here, what I saw was a regular small town, a little messy and a little behind the times.

窄窄的小巷、密集的店铺,无论是高处堆的,还是地上摆的,满眼是汝窑钧窑定窑元青花清粉彩”……历代名瓷的传世品就这样随意放着令人眼花缭乱。店主有抱着孩子看电视的,有支着桌子玩麻将的,有拿着草木灰擦拭瓷器做仿旧的,一边各忙各的,一边有一搭没一搭的接待着到访的散客。街上的主要运输工具是一辆辆靠人力推拉的板儿车,不时还有担着瓷器的挑夫从我面前穿街而过。

Among all the narrow alleys and tightly packed store fronts, either piled high in stacks, or scattered across the ground, all you see is porcelain ware, so much of it that it’s almost overwhelming. Many of these works are made by artists of styles handed down for hundreds of years. Some of the shop owners hold babies while watching TV, others play mah-jong with friends, and some idly brush their porcelain works with plant ash to olden them, all the while attending to any random customers who happen to stroll in. On the streets most of the vehicles used for transporting porcelain ware are hand-pulled carts, and once in a while you’ll see a man carrying some on a bamboo rod passing by.

豫明一再建议我去三闾庙古街看看古街位于昌江与西河交汇处老码头,是一条保存完好的窄巷子街道。虽然不能和现代都市相比,但是居住在古街的人使用着电脑、冰箱、电动车,小店里播放的电视剧也是和时代应的。

Yuming kept recommending I go check out Sanlü Temple Old Street, an ancient yet well preserved street located at the port where the Chang and West Rivers meet. Although far from what you’d find in a modern city, the residents on the old street still used computers, fridges and electric bikes, and in the shops they watched modern TV dramas.

对,这就是景德镇。

Yes, this is the Town of Jingde.

镇就镇吧,镇子的文化气场更好。豫明说。

Let’s call it a town then, a town has better cultural atmosphere,” said Yuming.

支撑着个体或群体与某个地方联结必然和人有关,包括人的情感、人的情怀、人的社会责任感等。景德镇的特别之处在于,这里不仅适于生活,也非常适于劳作。除了生活成本低,有多元、包容艺术交流氛围之外,与丽江、大理等古城不同,艺术家们在景德镇可以通过劳作得到市场的回报!

The connection between people and a place is closely related to human nature, encompassing emotion, interpersonal relationships, social responsibility, and so on. What’s special about Jingdezhen is that it’s a place that’s not only suited for living, it’s also very suited for artistic work. Aside from the town’s low living expenses and multifaceted, inclusive artistic atmosphere, different from other ancient cities like Lijiang and Dali, artists in Jingdezhen can actually make a living off of their work alone!

在进坑古村东郊学堂,我正和黄老师说话,豫明和一个姑娘一起穿着汉服出现在我面前,豫明本来就瘦,这身汉服倒有些道骨仙风的样子,更何况他的怀里还一把古琴。和他一起的姑娘叫谢朕,在这里从事汉服艺术国内的其它地方,穿件长衫汉袍会被认为是,引人侧目景德镇怎么穿都没有人管你。

On a visit to the nearby Jinkanggu Village “East Suburb Academy”, I was talking to an artist named Mr. Huang, when Yuming and a young lady appeared in front of me, both dressed in Hanfu (traditional Han robes). Yuming has always been thin, and in that garb he looked much like an old Daoist priest, especially since he was holding a guqin (an ancient seven-stringed zither instrument). The young lady’s name was Xie Zhen, and she was a Hanfu artist based in Jingdezhen. Everywhere else in China wearing such traditional robes would be considered a kind of “cosplay”, but in Jingdezhen no one will pay you much mind. 

谢朕说:景德镇是艺人的乌托邦。这就是景德镇的多元文化。

Xie Zhen told me, “Jingdezhen is a utopia for ‘protecting’ artists.” This is how inclusive the culture is here.

进坑古村还有一对小夫妻王志彪戴晓,他们在这里租下了一栋小楼,开了一家名为如是家庭宾馆。这是他们俩自己营造的世外桃源

In Jinkanggu Village there is also a couple named Wang Zhibiao and Dai Xiao, who rent a small building which they have fashioned into a family hotel, called Rushi (“Just Like That”). This is their own paradise on Earth that they have created.

来景德镇之前,只知道景德镇是古老的瓷都。到了景德镇之后,感受到这里特别的、自由的、手艺人共同营造的文化,就不想离开了。实际上这些手工打造的器皿已经彻底融入了我们的生活,像呼吸一般。小夫妻如是说。

The couple told me, “Before coming to Jingdezhen, all we knew was that it was the ancient ‘capital of porcelain’. After we got here I experienced the unique and free culture created together by the artists, and didn’t want to leave. Actually, these hand-made works of porcelain have completely become a part of our lives, just like breathing.”

豫明带我去陶溪川艺术区。这里由破产的宇宙瓷厂改建而来。

Yuming took me to the Taoxichuan Art District, which had been reconstructed from the Yuzhou Porcelain Factory that had gone bankrupt.

其实,景德镇的每个艺术区都离不开国外艺术家和中国艺术家的交流,在这里,他们共同探索新的设计理念,以及陶瓷未来面向国际化合作的可能性。

Actually, every art district of Jingdezhen is inseparable from exchange between Chinese artists and those from abroad. Together they explore new principles of design, and the possibility of the development of porcelain work toward future international collaboration.

来自美国的艺术家煤球(他给自己起的中文名字)正在陶溪川创意园艺术空间工作室里制作陶瓷,和他在一起还有德国、印度的艺术家。他们是应邀前来这里工作一年,所创作的作品一部分要留给邀请单位,即便是这样他们也很高兴参加这样的交流活动

There’s an American artist who goes by a Chinese name that means “Coal Ball”, who makes porcelain at a studio in the Taoxichuan Innovative Art Space, alongside artists from Germany and India. They were invited to come work here for a year, and a portion of their works were given to the people that invited them. This was a great opportunity for them to communicate with other artists.

煤球说:景德镇就像19世纪80年代的美国西部,有点野性,有点不驯,只是没有马和牛仔。所以在这里有很大自由来进行创造性的追求。

Coal Ball told me, “Jingdezhen is much like the western US in the 1880s, a little wild, a little untamed, all it’s missing are horses and cowboys. So this place offers lots of freedom for creative pursuit.”

另一个艺术家Ryan LaBar来自美国蒙大拿,他给自己起的中文名字叫“喇叭”。他在贡萨加大学攻读生物学和艺术。2014年他放弃在LH项目总监的职位来到景德镇,在陶溪川创意园建立了自己的工作室,他的作品现代理念强烈、繁忙与静止、无序与平衡、堆积与排序混在在一起,创造自己对陶瓷和艺术的理解。

I also met another American artist, named Ryan LaBar, who studied biology and art at Gonzaga University. In 2014 he quit his job as a project manager at LH to come to Jingdezhen, where he founded his own studio in Taoxichuan. His works bear a strong sense of modernity, with stark juxtapositions between hectic and tranquil, chaotic and balanced, piled in heaps and arranged in rows, showcasing his own unique artistic interpretations of porcelain.

Ryan LaBar说:景德镇是陶瓷起源的地方,是母亲。我制作陶瓷二十年,来到景德镇,就是回到了母亲的怀抱,挖掘出不一样的营养,感受母亲的力量。我觉得非常自豪可以在景德镇做点什么。看到景德镇现在和五年前我第一次来时发生了巨大变化,我感觉非常好,也希望自己在景德镇的付出,可以给景德镇带来更好的变化和注入新鲜的血液。

Ryan LaBar told me, “Jingdezhen is the place of origin, the mother, of porcelain. I’ve been making porcelain for 20 years, so coming to Jingdezhen was like a mother’s embrace. Here I’ve found new inspiration, and have experienced the power of motherly love. I feel very honored to be able to do something in Jingdezhen. The Jingdezhen we see now has changed drastically since the first time I came here five years ago. I think it’s great, and I hope that my work here will bring even greater change to Jingdezhen, and infuse it with fresh blood.” 

景德镇市郊的三宝村,是景德镇外来艺术家最早入驻的主要地方,外来人占了总人口的一半以上。豫明在景德镇的家就在这里。

Sanbao Village, on the outskirts of Jingdezhen, was the main destination of early settlement for outside artists in the area, with migrants accounting for over half the population. This is where Yuming’s Jingdezhen home is located.

不在市区、没有店面、来往都是朋友,待在三宝这样的地方,除了创作,更有过日子的味道。豫明的小院面朝青山,远处小溪蜿蜒而过,坐在院子里的秋千上慢悠悠地看山、喝茶、聊天都非常惬意。这是豫明自己的世外桃源,也让我颇为动心。豫明不止一次鼓动我找一个像三宝村这样的地方过自己的生活,但是我俗务缠身,总是难以决断。

Sanbao is located far from the city, where there are no stores, and everyone knows everyone. The artists’ lives in Sanbao, outside of work, are very slow-paced. Yuming’s courtyard home faces a lovely mountain, down which a small stream winds back and forth. It’s great to stay in his courtyard and sit on the swing, have some tea, and chat. This is Yuming’s own paradise on Earth, and I find it very inspiring. Yuming has suggested to me on several occasions to get my own place like that in Sanbao Village, but I’m always busy with more menial tasks, and have yet to come to a decision.

豫明现在做和陶瓷有关的绘画作品,他还改进了瓷板画传统的装裱方式,以凸显其特征。对他而言,除了市场的回报,创作的快感与认可也来自于和他人的心灵的碰撞。确实,在景德镇,最无价的就是和艺术家一起天马行空的对话,无所不包又字字珠玑。有些时候对方抛出的一个智囊团会突然让你脑洞大开,有了一个很好的创作思路。

Yuming’s is currently working on illustration related to porcelain, and he has altered the traditional mounting method of porcelain panel painting, so as to emphasize its characteristics. For him, aside from market return, the enjoyment and acceptance of his works stem from his intellectual exchanges with others. In Jingdezhen, what’s most valuable is definitely being able to converse with artists in an unrestrained manner, about anything and everything, which often leads to priceless dialogs. Sometimes the other party will throw something out there that will make you come to a sudden realization, serving as a great creative thread for you.

因着我的缘故,豫明还热情地把三宝蓬艺术中心的肖学峰、李虎两位负责人找了过来位不但是成功的商人,更是有着艺术眼光活动家。他们在三宝村50亩土地上投资了1.5亿,建造三宝蓬艺术中心——景德镇艺术馆,打造出一个当代国际艺术的聚集区,可谓是:悦隐千年,器成天下。

Since I was there, Yuming gladly contacted the two overseers of the Sanbao Fengyi Art Center, Xiao Xuefeng and Li Hu. They are both not only successful businesspeople, but also activists with an artistic eye. They invested a total of 150 million yuan in just over 8 acres of space in Sanbao Village, to create the Sanbao Fengyi Art Center and Jingdezhen Art Museum, which together serve as an international collection of contemporary art, and showcase the timeless art of Jingdezhen for the world to enjoy.

我们一直在聊天。熟悉景德镇的人都知道瓷器和三宝村分不开,这里风景不错,自古是加工瓷石的地方,尤其是近十几年,这里变得越来越好玩,有像北京当年的798又隐于798。这里自发聚集了上百位来自各地乃至海外的陶瓷艺术家,他们在这里建立工作室使得这里变成了陶瓷的艺术聚集地。

Yuming and I love to chat together. People who know Jingdezhen know that porcelain is inseparable from Sanbao Village. The scenery here is quite amazing, having been a production base for porcelain since ancient times, but especially in the past decade or so it has become more and more fun, sort of like Beijing’s 798 Art District when it first started out, only much less mainstream. Over a hundred artists from all over China, and even abroad, have settled here and opened their own studios, so that Sanbao has become a conglomeration of all kinds of porcelain art.

三宝蓬艺术中心之所以建在这里,也正是因为这里是艺术和陶瓷的灵魂聚集地。陶瓷人和他们的故事在这里发生,他们又大都与陶瓷有关,每年聚集来的景漂都把这里当成隐居地。这是个有着世界上最好陶瓷匠人的地方,是一个能辐射国际陶瓷的瓷心

The Fengyi Art Center was built in Sanbao because of the village’s cultural and artistic atmosphere. Stories about porcelain craftsmen and their work unfold every day here, and every year many more “Jingde drifters” choose this place to settle in and become hermits. The best porcelain artists in the world are in Sanbao, and the village has become the international “heart of porcelain”.

“三宝蓬”艺术中心在建设中就开始和艺术家进行艺术泼墨活动

陶瓷创作最吸引的地方就是瓷人之间的关系,经历窑火的变身才拥有了耐以琢磨的美像是少男少女之间,总要经过火的燃烧才能真正捕捉到爱情的精髓。人跟瓷也许是在谈恋爱吧,正如有些艺术家所言:景德镇时刻让我有初恋般的怦然心动。

The most captivating aspect of porcelain is the relationship between porcelain and the artist. Only after firing is porcelain transformed into its durable and beautiful form, just like a relationship between a man and a woman has to go through hardship before real love can be experienced. So making porcelain is a lot like being in love, and several artists have said something along the lines of, “Jingdezhen always makes me the excitement of being in love for the first time.”

或许这和艺术家和美女的关系有些相似。

Maybe it’s like the relationship between the artist and the model.

豫明常说一句话为什么喜欢景德镇?第一是这里有传承。第二这里有美食。第三这里有美女,这些三宝村全有。

When asked why he likes Jingdezhen, Yuming often says, “First, there’s artistic heritage here in Sanbao. Second, the food is great. Third, the women are beautiful.”

来三宝村的第二天.肖学峰、李虎两人邀请我参加三宝蓬艺术中心烧烤晚会。同时被邀请的还有其他几景德镇的艺术家。干道甫是最后一个到的,他兴奋告诉大家,明天他的柴窑要开窑,欢迎大家去见证瓷器出窑一刻。

On my second day in Sanbao Village, Xiao Xuefeng and Li Hu invited me to a firing event at the art center, along with some other Jingdezhen-based artists. The last to arrive was Gan Daofu, who excitedly told everyone that the following day his wood kiln would be open, and welcomed everyone to come witness the firing of the first pieces there.

hen always makes me the excitement of being in love for the first time.”

趁着酒劲,干道甫对我说:马老师,你若明天不走,我就把窑宝送给你。

After a few drinks, Gan Daofu said to me, “Mr. Ma, if you’re still around tomorrow, I’ll give you my ‘kiln treasure’.”

李虎在一旁接话:老师,你说话可要算数

Li Hu replied for me, “Mr. Gan, don’t make promises you can’t keep.”

开窑对一个陶瓷艺术家来说无异于热恋期的约会,那个兴奋劲儿可以体会。于是,我改签机票,我想见证干道甫与自己恋人相见的那一刻,当然窑宝也吸引着我。

Opening a kiln, to a porcelain artist, is as exciting as a date between two lovers at the peak of infatuation. So I changed the date of my plane ticket, so that I could witness the meeting between Gan Daofu and his “lover”, and of course that “kiln treasure” of his was a big attraction to me.

第二天我和豫明冒雨去了三宝村后面的山里干道甫的柴窑就在山的最里面,在没有人干扰的地方做自己喜欢的事情真是一件令人陶醉的事情。

The next day Yuming and I went in the rain up into the mountains behind Sanbao Village. Gan Daofu’s wood kiln was in the furthest reaches of the mountains. Being able to be completely undisturbed as one does what one loves most is a very intoxicating experience. 

干道甫说:在景德镇做陶瓷,是一辈子最幸福的事,如果有下辈子,还来景德镇。 

Gan Daofu said, “Doing porcelain in Jingdezhen has been the greatest part of my life. If I’m ever reincarnated, I want to come here again.”

开窑的时候,干道甫和他的师兄先敬祖师太上老君,这是窑工的神。接着到场的七八位艺术家和我每人都取下一块窑门上的封砖。

For the kiln opening ceremony, Gan Daofu and his senior fellow apprentices first paid homage to laozi, who is regarded as the god of the art of porcelain making. Next the seven or eight other artists and I all received a brick from where the kiln was opened.

瓷器一件一件的往外拿,这一窑成功出了200多件,每一件都非常漂亮。

Piece after piece of porcelain was fired in the kiln, and in no time 200 pieces had been successfully completed, each extremely stunning.

突然听李虎说了一声:“’窑宝出来了,这一件可是归马老师了。

I heard Li Hu exclaim, “The ‘kiln treasure’ is done! This is for Mr. Ma!”

窑宝太漂亮了:瓷身的纹路变化不是泾渭分明,而是若有若无,颇有水墨写意的美感。纹路的色彩以黄为主,但又带着窑变中自然生成的青、、黑三色纹理,像美人儿如雪肌肤上的刺青一样。

The “kiln treasure” was truly magnificent. The changes of the patterning varied between distinct and indistinct, aesthetically pleasing in a way much like ink painting. Most of the patterning was yellow in color, but in some places the firing resulted in green, blue and black coloring, like tattoos across the alabaster skin of a beautiful woman.

大家相继拿起窑宝观看,简直爱不释手干道甫急匆匆地叫来窑工,让他注意一下窑宝此次在窑中摆放的位置,希望下次烧窑时还能有一个同样漂亮的瓷器出现。我将其理解为,既是一个陶瓷艺术家的烧制经验总结,也是一个男人将美人儿忍痛割爱后的心有不甘。

Each person took the “kiln treasure” in their hands to take a closer look, none able to take their eyes off of it. Gan Daofu summoned a kiln worker, and told him to note the location in the kiln where the “kiln treasure” had been placed, so that next time they used the kiln they could acquire an equally pleasant piece. My understanding was that this was both a summary of experience on behalf of the porcelain artist, and a kind of reluctance similar to that between the man and this “beautiful woman”.

接着,大家聚在一起喝酒,盛酒的器皿都是新烧制出来的瓷器,干道甫表示,哪个瓷器喝酒,那个瓷器就归谁。因此,大家非常开心,场面很是热烈。平时不喝酒的我也喝上了,否则窑宝怎么

Following this, it was time for everyone to have a drink together. The vessels used to drink from were porcelain works that had just been fired in the kiln. Gan Daofu pointed out that whichever vessel you used was yours to keep. So of course everyone was very happy, and the excitement was palpable. I drank from the “kiln treasure”, so as to make sure I could justify taking it home.

几天的采访结束了,我对景德镇又有了一个新的认识。传统的气息依然熏陶着来自四面八方的人,但外来艺术家在景德镇的居住,给景德镇带来了艺术上的创新。和传统的陶瓷人相比,艺术家的视界更广阔,作品更接近当代审美

After performing a few days worth of interviews, I learned much about Jingdezhen that I hadn’t previously. The traditional atmosphere there nurtures people from all over the world, but artists from other places living in Jingdezhen bring to it a great degree of artistic innovation. In comparison to traditional porcelain craftsmen, artists have a much broader view of the world, and their works much more closely appeal to contemporary aesthetics.

一个碗不是画了青花才成为一件艺术品,一个做得好的碗,即便什么都不画,也是艺术品。

“A bowl doesn’t need ornate patterning to become a piece of art, a bowl made well enough, even if left plain, is still art.”

这句话道出了艺术家的心声,影射了景德镇当下的艺术发展氛围。不同人群,不同机构,对艺术和发展有不同的认知,彼此间有摩擦也相互合作。大家在适应变化的同时,也成为了推动改变的其中一员。这里既是一个文艺化与国际化的开放的主场,也是充满了人间烟火味的江湖。

This is an expression from the hearts of artists, and reflects the current atmosphere of artistic development in Jingdezhen. Different groups of people and different organizations have different cognitions of art and development, resulting in both conflict and collaboration. Each person, while adapting to change, becomes a part of propelling this change. Jingdezhen is a closely knit community, and a place of liberal artistry and globalization.
