甘肃算命村A Fortune-Telling Village in Gansu

算命村在甘肃薛家湾,传说他们是吉卜赛人的后裔,但这是难有定论说法而已,他们也没有吉普赛人的血统,不过是以算卦为业、流浪为生,而被称为“中国吉卜赛人”。也有人说村里有人给雍正皇帝算过命。其实那个时候这个村子还不存在,清末时期才有这个村子的记载。如今高、刘、何、柳四大姓是村子里的主要家族。也是算命者中主要的人物。

In Xuejiawan, Gansu Province, there is a village of fortune tellers. They are said by some to be descendants of the gypsies, although there is no substantial evidence for this, and it can be proven that they do not bear any hereditary lineage of the gypsies, they simply spend their lives roaming and tell fortunes for a living, so they’re known as the “gypsies of China”. And some people say they have told fortunes for the Yongzheng Emperor, despite the fact that there are no historical records showing that the village even existed at that time. The four main surnames in the village are Gao, He, Liu (second tone) and Liu (third tone), and the majority of the fortune tellers hail from these families.

村里算命有人看手相、有人看面相,这叫麻衣相。有些有文化的会学习一些周易来给人推算,倒是准确机率更高一些,这当然要看这个人的文化程度,如果不识字、看不懂文字他也不可能读书学习《周易》。而且周易相当深奥,仅靠文化也不能完全理解,还需要先天的悟性。近日,辽宁省朝阳市公安局抓获特大盗掘古文化遗址、其中就有一个懂风水的“高手”姚某某,此人只需观察山水的走势和阴阳,就能把挖掘位置缩小到10平方米左右。可见中国的风水八卦习俗在民间盛行了几千年。

Among the village fortune tellers are palm readers and face readers, which are collectively known as “hemp clothes fortune tellers”. Some with higher levels of education will learn about The Book of Changes (aka The I-Ching) to give more comprehensive readings, in which case the odds of a correct reading are significantly higher. Of course the fortune teller’s skill depends on his education level, because if he is illiterate there would be no way he could study The Book of Changes, as it is extremely complex, and even a high degree of literacy won’t guarantee one can understand it completely, with the reader’s innate abilities of perception being integral. Recently the Liaoning Chaoyang City Public Security Bureau arrested a man, named Mr. Yao, who had been using his advanced skills in fengshui to find and break into historical sites and steal ancient artefacts; apparently he only had to observe the layout of the nearby mountains and water, and the ebb and flow of yin and yang energies, to determine where to dig within a 10 m2 area. This is one other way the teachings of The Book of Changes have been put to use thousands of years after their conception.

八卦有三种,先天八卦出自伏羲;后天出自文王;中天出自卫元蒿。

There are three types of Daoist divination: xiantian divination comes from Fuxi, houtian divination from King Wen, and zhongtian divination from Wei Yuanhao.

先天八卦,又称伏羲八卦,传说是由距今七千年的伏羲氏观物取象的所作。伏羲创立“先天八卦”时代认为---“天地者万物之上下也”,即天在上、地在下。作。先天八卦的卦序是:一乾、二兑、三离、四震、五巽、六坎、七艮、八坤。

Xiantian divination, also known as Fuxi divination, was, according to legend, created by Fuxi based on how he viewed the world. Fuxi, the creator of man, believed that “All matter is between Heaven and Earth”, meaning that Heaven is above all and Earth is beneath all. The sequence of trigrams used in xiantian divination is “qian (Heaven), dui, li, zhen, xun, kan, gen and kun (Earth)”.

周文王对“先天八卦”进行了改进,认为先天八卦既然是讲“天地对待(定位)”,但只有冬与夏符合,春与秋的位置并不对称。其次是虽然冬夏位置的定位不差,但因先天八卦强调“乾阳在上、坤阴在下”,这又违背自然规律(阳在下可上升、阴在上可下降)。那么,先天八卦“乾在上坤在下”阴阳就不能相交,怎能生出六子(万物)?又怎能概括大自然之理呢?于是就创制了“后天八卦”。 “后天八卦”的依次为巽卦,东南;离卦,正南;坤卦,西南;兑卦,正西;乾卦,西北;坎卦,正北;艮卦,东北。

King Wen of Zhou revised the teachings of xiantian divination, as he believed that although divination involved the opposition between Heaven and Earth, among the four seasons only winter and summer followed this principle, whereas spring and autumn were not opposed to one another. In addition, xiantian divination emphasized the fact that qian (yang) was always in the upper position, while kun (yin) was always in the lower one, which went against one of the principles of nature, i.e. positive yang energy was low but could rise, and negative yin energy was high but could fall. In that case, if according to xiantian divination, there was no way yin and yang could cross paths, then how could they fuse to form the matter of the world? And how could they be inclusive of all of nature? So King Wen then created houtian divination, which used the following sequence: xun in the southeast, li in the south, kun in the southwest, dui in the west, qian in the northwest, kan in the north, and gen in the northeast.

这些神相学内容都是历史给后人留下的玄妙之处, “不属于科学范畴”或“无法用科学某学科的理论知识来解释”。至今在中国没有一个人能把《周易》完整精通的悟道出来,能悟道六成的人已经是一个神人了。

These guidelines left later generations with much to ponder over, being “outside the boundaries of scientific study” or “unexplainable by the theories and knowledge of any scientific field”. To date no one has been able to completely grasp every aspect of The Book of Changes, and someone who understands more than 60% of it is considered extremely well-versed in its teachings.

爱因斯坦说:上帝不掷骰子。但科学嘛,还是掷骰子的,只不过科学致力于减少不确定性,具有无可匹敌的实用性。《易经》之中也有很多科学无法解释的现象。

Albert Einstein once said, “God does not play dice”. But science does; only science strives to reduce uncertainty, and possesses unrivalled practicability. There are many phenomena in The Book of Changes that science cannot explain.

薛家湾四大姓中最出名的是“高蛮子”,其名声之大西北地区无人不晓。“高蛮子”的老婆双目失明,但她摸手纹算命的技术却很高明。“高蛮子”死后,儿子高万山继承他的衣钵,成为薛家湾最受推崇的占卜高手。占卜、禳灾、鸟占玩得都很精到,桃花镇81种镇法他大都会用,更厉害的是只有他懂无量祖师的聚星镇法。可惜已过世多年。现在她的后代也在村中是有名的算命先生。

Among all four of the famous families of Xuejiawan, the most famous person is a man named Gao Manzi, a fortune teller who is known by virtually everyone throughout northwestern China. Gao Manzi’s wife was completely blind, but she became very proficient in palm reading. After Gao Manzi passed away, his son Gao Wanshan carried on his legacy, becoming the most renowned fortune teller in Xuejiawan, being highly skilled in divination, disaster prevention practices, and interpretation of bird calls. He was able to implement most of the 81 Taohua Town pacification methods, and was the only person at the time able to understand the “collective stars” pacification method of the Boundless Patriarch.

关于薛家湾人的报道,有意无意地为薛家湾村落蒙上了一层神秘的色彩。但是当真正走近他们,目睹他们与祖先的占卜术相去甚远的算命术时,我们感受到,如今薛家湾人的占卜术仅仅是一种赖以维持生计的手段,薛家湾人的思想观念、生活方式都在发生着深刻的变化。

As for objective impressions of the people of Xuejiawan, whether conscious or otherwise, they have gradually been enshrouded in a deep cloud of mystery. But when you actually approach them and witness their fortune telling skills first-hand, you’ll get the impression that for them fortune telling is merely a profession, a means to support themselves, while at the same time the ideologies and lifestyle of the village are constantly undergoing great changes. 

开车进村,一个老汉正在村头往木桩上拴一头羊,看到我们停车问路就跑过来问我们干嘛,我们说找算命的人,老汉不客气的说,我就可以给你算,惹得我们脸笑心慌的。心想,这真是算命的村呵,连一个老羊馆都会算命。

As we drive up to the village, an old man tying a sheep up at a post sees us parking, and runs over to ask what business we have. We say we’re looking for a fortune teller, to which the old man candidly responds that he could tell our fortunes for us. This makes us both laugh with surprise and feel uneasy, thinking that this really must be a fortune telling village, if even a random old shepherd can do it.

我们见的第一个老太太已经近七十多岁了,看的就是手相。也就是江湖人士揣摩心理、观其面相变化,力求玄妙不失语,安稳人的心理为主而已,准不准只有自己心理清楚呵。

The first old lady we came across was a palm reader well into her 70s. She told us some deeply fascinating yet somewhat ambiguous and mysterious things about ourselves, mainly aiming to psychologically satisfy us; as for whether or not what they say was true, that’s up to the listener to decide.

第二个是刘继文,他上过学,当过老师,爷爷是著名的算命先生,弟兄几个就他悟性比较好。他算命用的是周易八卦推算。学过《三命通会》及《渊海子平》、《三元总录》、《八字预测学》、《四柱命理预测学》、《协级辨方术》、《中国古代算命术》、《周易预测学》和老太太算得完全不一样,道理也比较吻合。不少达官贵人也来找他算命。具体怎么样还需要时间来验证的他的推测。

The next person we saw was a man named Liu Jiwen, who was quite highly educated, having been a teacher, and his grandfather was a famous fortune teller. Jiwen was the only child among all his siblings who showed talent at divination, and he used The Book of Changes to tell us our futures. He had also studied divination classics such as Collection of the Three Fates, Yuan Hai Zi Ping, Complete Record of the Three Elements, Eight-Character Divination, Four Pillar Numerology Forecasting, Xie Ji Bian Necromancy, Ancient Chinese Divination, and Fortune Telling with the Book of Changes. He offered very different perspectives from the old lady, and his divinations made much more sense than those of the others. Many wealthy and powerful people come to him to hear their fortunes. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if his predictions come true or not.

薛家湾170多户人家中,虽然家家有人外出算卦,但除了少部分人收入较高外,大多数人一年的收入多在2000元至3000元之间。据他们讲,如今外出算命挣钱已越来越不容易。村落里女人外出卜卦,男人居家的传统生活方式已逐步改变,有相当一部分妇女,尤其年轻妇女,开始告别向婆婆学习算命术并外出云游的传统生活方式,走出家门打工挣钱,就连算命高手高坐明的儿媳也不例外。

Among the 170-plus families in Xuejiawan, although each have members who tell fortunes away from the village, aside from a few who make a decent living, the vast majority of them only make a meager 2000 to 3000 RMB a year. They say that the travelling fortune teller is a dying trade, and the traditional lifestyle of the woman of the household leaving home to tell fortunes, while the man stays at home, is gradually fading away. An increasingly large number of women, especially young women, are giving up the tradition of learning to tell fortunes from their mothers-in-law, choosing instead to work in the nearby cities, the daughter-in-law of master fortune teller Gao Zuoming being no exception. 

算命有道理,遇上高手看机缘。一语道破天机的人我还没有见过。所谓的:“命由天定,运由己定”。遇上高人开悟,贵人相助,还能有不成功的人生吗。

Although a skilled fortune teller can give quite accurate estimations, I’ve never seen one who could actually “tell the future”. There’s a saying in Chinese, “One’s destiny is in the heavens, but his fortune is in his own hands”. With learned people to provide enlightenment, and able people to offer help, anyone can have a successful life.
